Legacy Origin

Originally authored in 1979 by Eric Allman for the 4.0 Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), delivermail is the historical predecessor to modern email routing.

Before standardized DNS or TCP/IP existed, computer networks were heavily fragmented. Acting as a revolutionary layer of indirection, it solved the complex challenge of translating and routing messages across entirely incompatible early-era protocols like ARPANET and UUCP.
